Abstract
The possible application of semantic information in the field of collaboration management is a research topic that promises remarkable results [1]. In the first section of this paper, a short historical summary is provided regarding the field of collaboration from two different aspects. First, the possibility of intelligent configuration and management of collaborative environments is considered, i.e. whether machine generated solutions can provide more efficient solutions in the case of complex systems. Second, the way in which information is searched and accessed is considered from the point of view of physical uniformity and uniformity of logic in global information networks. Based on these considerations, semantic information representation is introduced as a possible backbone for the intelligent recognition of dynamic requirements and services which can fulfill these requirements in automated systems. In the second section of the paper, the Virtual Collaboration Arena (VirCA) collaboration management platform is presented. Related to the VirCA platform, the concept of 3D Internet collaboration is introduced as a possible future application of current technologies. Various capabilities of the platform, such as common manipulation of virtual content and on-demand multicast message passing are introduced. Finally, a semantic extension is proposed for the system which can help enable semantic collaboration management in the future. The core ontology of the extension is presented, and the possibility for enhancement with existing ontologies is discussed. An application scenario is presented to justify the need for such semantic extensions in future collaboration platforms.
